Bimbo Akintola Criticises Younger Nollywood Actresses Over Obsession With Looks

Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has taken a swipe at the younger generation of actresses, accusing them of prioritising physical appearance and body enhancement surgeries over true passion for the craft.
The 55-year-old thespian made the remarks during a candid interview with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, where she reflected on the evolution of Nollywood and the differences between her generation and today’s crop of actors.
Akintola praised screen legends such as Sola Sobowale and Joke Silva, describing them as embodiments of “pure, unwavering passion for acting.”
“And every person that we met in the industry was so passionate, even Aunty Joke and Aunty Shola were so passionate about the work,” she said.
“You had people working overnight and not sleeping. Who is talking about food? 12 or 14 working hours? You work till the next day and till you finish. It wasn’t about glamour. Our work is reality, sometimes we reflect life back at society. I think you still get that passion when you do stage. You still see people that just want to do their best in front of the audience.”
However, the actress lamented that in recent times, the focus appears to have shifted.
“People now say, ‘No, my make-up is not right for this,’ ‘I can’t wear this.’ We are more concerned about our look. Which is why there is a spike in BBL. Because everybody is BBLing. They are more concerned about their look rather than the content.”
Akintola’s comments have since sparked discussions among fans and colleagues, with some agreeing that Nollywood’s younger generation is more focused on glamour and social media influence, while others argue that the industry has simply evolved with global entertainment trends.
