I Chose Peace Over Pain – Ngozi Nwosu Speaks About Abusive Relationships

By Cookey Mba
Veteran Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu has opened up about a painful chapter in her life, revealing that she called off her wedding after enduring repeated physical abuse from her former partner.

Speaking during an interview on Real Life With Aunty Ayo Adesanya, Nwosu recounted how her ex-fiancé once dragged her by the hair until she bled — a traumatic incident that became the turning point in her decision to walk away from the relationship just a day before their planned wedding.

The actress said despite pressure from her family and her partner to proceed with the marriage, she stood her ground and refused to sign the marriage documents.

“Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. When domestic violence becomes too much, it’s best to walk away. If you accept it once, be ready to keep accepting it for the rest of your life,” Nwosu said.

Recalling one of the most violent episodes, the Fuji House of Commotion star said,

“He broke the kitchen door while I was boiling water, dragged me by my hair, and I started bleeding. That’s a day I’ll never forget. I don’t know where I got the strength from that day, but I picked up a pestle to defend myself. My neighbours even saw me naked.”

Nwosu urged women not to stay in abusive relationships or believe promises that violence will stop, warning that physical abuse often repeats itself.

“Don’t stay with a man who beats you and apologizes later. Once it happens, it will happen again,” she cautioned.

Her revelation has since drawn widespread attention online, with many commending her courage and reinforcing the message that no relationship or marriage is worth enduring violence for.
