Beads And Its Significance In Igbo Culture

The Igbo people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria. The Igbos have a unique culture from among the people of Nigeria. The Igbo tradition seeks to uphold the rich Igbo cultural heritage and values and has nothing at all to do with paganism. However, traditional clothing and ornaments are essential part of Igbo people.

 In Igbo culture, beads are very essential ornaments. There are different kinds of beads worn for various purposes. Beads are not peculiar to the men of Igbo land; it’s part of dressing for women too. 

These beads are not just a decoration because of the protective power and the spiritual sentiments surrounding them.  They are worn by the most outstanding members of the Igbo society, mainly the red cap chiefs and women of honour.  As a chief, it is an honour to wear the red cap and beads.

Coral beads, also called Africa’s prized jewel, have been used for thousands of years and have been passed down many generations of the Igbo and still relevant till today. The coral beadssignify royalty, wealth and chieftaincy.

The coral beads are a staple fashion accessory used by most brides and grooms in the Igbo land during their traditional wedding. For the brides, it may be the one time their necks are adorned with the bright orange strings as they show royalty.

In Igbo land, the maidens also wear beads as a symbol of femininity and sensuality. They usually wear beads with their wrappers around their waists, necks, ankles and wrists.

Today, beads are being used as a symbol of the Igbo people as it has become an excellent choice for occasions.
